Berlin Hauptbahnhof (German: Berlin Central Station) is the main railway station in Berlin and one of the largest train stations in Europe. Designed by architect Meinhard von Gerkan, it opened on May 26, 2006. Located on the site of the historic Lehrter Bahnhof, which was destroyed during World War II and later demolished, the station spans two levels with a total of 18 tracks: Upper level: 6 tracks (2 for the S-Bahn urban rail and 4 for long-distance trains). Lower level: 8 tracks for regional and long-distance trains, 2 tracks for the U-Bahn (metro), and 2 additional tracks reserved for future S-Bahn expansion. Berlin Hauptbahnhof serves as a major hub for domestic and international rail traffic, connecting Germany with destinations across Europe. It handles approximately 300,000 passengers and 1,600 trains daily, including international, regional, and commuter services.
